It was a signatory to the agitation-ending Assam Accord of August 1985 that sought “detection, deletion (from voters’ list) and deportation” of illegal migrants from the State.“The figure of 19 lakh NRC-rejects is not what we expected, given the history of large-scale influx into Assam. This NRC has turned out to be incomplete and error-prone. We will appeal to the Supreme Court to remove the faults and discrepancies,” AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.NGO Assam Public Works, whose petition in the Supreme Court in July 2009 led to the start of the NRC exercise four years later, also criticised the findings. It said it would move the apex court again besides writing to the President of India, the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister for rechecking the final NRC figures.“We had fought for removing foreigners from Assam, not for their ‘Indianisation’ which is what the NRC has done. For more than a year, we have been telling the Supreme Court for 100% reverification of documents but the NRC State Coordinator’s claim of 27% sample reverification was accepted,” the NGO chief, Aabhijeet Sarma, said. “The NRC authority found 5,464 ‘Bangladeshis’ after 29% reverification in Cachar district, 4,096 in Dhubri district after 38% reverification, and 3,980 in Karimganj district after 25% reverification. If these many were detected, imagine how many would have been identified after 100% reverification,” he said.“We will leave no stone unturned for a quality check and a total reverification of the NRC documents. We will also demand an audit of the Rs. 1,600 crore spent on the update exercise,” he added.
After a slew of defections from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections, now smaller parties like the Raju Shetti-led Swabhimani Paksha and Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) have started losing key leaders. In a major setback to Mr. Shetti on Thursday, his right-hand man, Ravikant Tupkar, resigned from the Swabhimani Paksha. Mr. Tupkar, a mainstay of the party and one of its rising stars, is said to be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon. His move has prompted the Swabhimani Paksha leadership to urge Mr. Shetti to step into the poll arena himself. Mr. Shetti told The Hindu on Friday, “[Mr. Tupkar] spoke to me yesterday and said he was taking this decision as he saw no future in our party. While his loss is undeniable as he was a good spokesperson who had come up from our farmers’ movement, none of his supporters have left our party.” Mr. Shetti had been resting his hopes on Mr. Tupkar to deliver the goods in Buldhana district, where the latter is said to have a strong following. In fact, prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Shetti had asked for the Buldhana Lok Sabha seat from the Congress-NCP with the objective of fielding Mr. Tupkar. At the time, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had persuaded Mr. Shetti to settle for another seat (eventually, the Sangli seat) while promising to back Mr. Tupkar for a seat in either house of the State legislature. Since his upset loss in the Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Shetti has focused on rebuilding his party and said he is not interested in contesting the Assembly polls. However, after Mr. Tupkar’s resignation, Mr. Shetti is mulling contesting the polls to rally his crumbling party. “I will announce my decision within two days,” he told The Hindu.Meanwhile, the VBA suffered a jolt after its spokesperson, Gopichand Padalkar, an influential Dhangar leader from Sangli district, recently resigned as the party’s general secretary.Mr. Ambedkar had inducted Mr. Padalkar, a former BJP leader with a deep affiliation to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, into the VBA. The move had raised eyebrows owing to Mr. Padalkar’s close association with Sambhaji Bhide ‘Guruji’, whose name had surfaced in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence.Mr. Padalkar had contested from the Sangli Lok Sabha seat on a VBA ticket, polling three lakh votes and affirming his hold over the Dhangar community. However, he changed his stripes soon after the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls and is likely to rejoin the BJP.At a recent meeting with his followers, he said, “[The BJP-led government] is the first administration since Independence to attempt to do something for the welfare of the Dhangars. The other parties do not care anything for the needs of our community.”
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had a simple explanation after the Toronto Raptors’ latest victory.“If you want to win, you got to play defense,” Leonard said. “That is every game in the NBA.”Leonard and Pascal Siakam each scored 30 points, with Siakam setting a career high, and the Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 123-116 on Saturday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the NBA standings.Leonard also matched his season high with five steals.Serge Ibaka added 25 points and nine rebounds, Fred VanVleet had a season-high tying 21 points and Danny Green 12 points and nine rebounds for Toronto which snapped a three-game losing streak to Milwaukee.Toronto improved to 29-12, and Milwaukee dropped to 27-11.Milwaukee led in the first quarter, but saw the margin shrink to one at the half as Toronto started making shots and playing defense.“I thought that we kind of took some air out of them a little bit there,” VanVleet said. “That was a huge way to close the half. We closed it (the second) with a 7-0 run and came out in the third quarter with another run. I thought that we were in control for the rest of the way.”The Bucks clung to a 57-56 lead at the half, but the Raptors had already turned the game in their favor.“We kind of let up the second quarter going into the half,” the Bucks Eric Bledsoe said. “They cut it to one and we kind of let up then. We never could get our rhythm back.”Toronto opened the third with a 26-12 run, capped by Siakam’s turnaround bank hook for a 63-57 lead at the 10:05 mark.“What helped us was the beginning of that third quarter,” Leonard said. “We came out in the first two minutes playing well, getting stops, getting some open looks. We kept moving from there.”Antetokounmpo tried to rally the Bucks in the fourth when he scored eight points on a pair of 3s and a layup during a 14-4 run. His three-pointer gave Milwaukee a 96-95 lead with 8:12 to play, but the Raptors answered with a 15-2 surge capped by Siakam’s wide-open 3 from the corner for a 110-98 lead with 5:14 to play.Giannis Antetokounmpo had 43 points and 18 rebounds, each stat one shy of his career-high. Malcolm Brogdon added 15 points and Middleton and Bledsoe each had 14. The Bucks had won five straight.Milwaukee was coming off a 144-112 victory over Atlanta on Friday night.TIP-INSRaptors: C Jonas Valanciunas (left thumb dislocation) missed his 11th consecutive game. That is the way we need to play if you want to be a serious contender.”UP NEXT:Raptors: Host Indiana on Sunday night.Bucks: Host Utah on Monday night.By JOE TOTORAITIS , Associated PressTweetPinShare0 Shares
When the Kansas City Chiefs host the Oakland Raiders Thursday night, the outcome will go a long way toward determining who wins the AFC West and will influence the whole conference’s playoff picture. But further down the game’s list of notable implications is the fact that it’s one of the best Thursday night games1We’re counting any prime-time game played on a Thursday as a Thursday night game, even though some games played on Thursday nights are marketed as “Sunday Night Football” or “Monday Night Football” and some games marketed as “Thursday Night Football” are played on other days of the week. in NFL history.Just like when I sized up the awfulness of Week 8’s Jaguars-Titans Thursday night tilt, we can measure the quality of a given NFL matchup by taking the harmonic mean of the two teams’ pre-game Elo ratings (FiveThirtyEight’s pet metric for estimating a team’s quality at any given moment). And according to that measure, tonight’s K.C.-Oakland game is the seventh-best Thursday night matchup in NFL history: The best Thursday night NFL matchups of all time 111/29/07DallasGreen Bay166016491655 211/27/14**SeattleSan Francisco166816291648 69/9/04*New EnglandIndianapolis166715911628 310/23/14DenverSan Diego168816071646 99/5/13*BaltimoreDenver162816091618 109/10/09*PittsburghTennessee164515931618 411/26/98**MinnesotaDallas167716101643 712/8/16Kansas CityOakland166215861623 811/24/11**BaltimoreSan Francisco162816101619 DATETEAM 1TEAM 2TEAM 1TEAM 2HARMONIC MEAN 59/8/16*DenverCarolina163716341635 *NFL’s season-opening game.**Thanksgiving night game.In each matchup, “Team 1” is the higher-rated team according to Elo.Source: Pro-Football-Reference.com At the same time, Monday night matchups have been getting worse, and now the two days have very nearly pulled even in terms of their average quality.2At least in prime time; I excluded non-prime-time Thursday games such as Thanksgiving day games. Both are still far, far below the level established by the league’s flagship prime-time games on Sunday nights. But with more games like tonight’s Raiders-Chiefs tilt, Thursday night is no longer merely a place for the NFL to stash terrible matchups so it can get every team on prime-time TV.Check out our latest NFL predictions. In fact, if we toss out special Thursday occasions — Thanksgiving and the NFL’s annual opening-night showcase — Raiders-Chiefs rises to third-best among the ranks of ordinary Thursday night games. We haven’t seen a matchup this good emerge organically from the Thursday night schedule since the Broncos hosted the Chargers in Oct. 2014.Good Thursday night games like Chiefs-Raiders are part of a larger comeback trend. Thursday night football has been a perennial punchline, particularly since 2012, when the NFL decided to play a Thursday night game almost every week instead of firing the feature up at midseason for the stretch run, as it did between 2006 and 2011. But after a rocky start, the quality of these midweek games has slowly risen over the past five seasons: PRE-GAME ELO RATING

12 3:05 Comments Now playing: Watch this: Turned On Tags My conversation with Harmony the sexbot Warning: This post contains descriptions unsuitable for young readers. Let’s begin by picturing a Venn diagram. On one side, you’ve got people who enjoy recording video of themselves having sex. On the other, you’ve got people who wear silicone rings around their penis to help maintain an erection. Julz Folks in the middle of that Venn diagram might be especially interested in the “Cock Cam” from UK company Julz.”Capture your climax,” reads the company’s website as it welcomes you to “the world’s first cock ring with a camera,” available now for $160.”Yes,” the copy adds, “it’s exactly what it sounds like!”Points for truth in advertising, I suppose. The site even lets you watch an NSFW sample video recorded by a base jumper wearing a prosthetic, strap-on appendage over the top of his jumpsuit as he parachutes down a mountain (you know, like so many of us do). The first-person view is admittedly quite scenic, though the effect is somewhat spoiled by the large rubber dildo flopping wildly in the foreground.Weighing in at less than an ounce, the camera in Julz’s “stretchy yet tight” wearable ring records up to 90 minutes of 1080p, H.264 video in MP4 format. It features night vision, too, as well as a rechargeable lithium battery.”When filming for long periods of time the camera runs warm,” Julz cautions. “The product is safe to use. If the Cock Cam becomes uncomfortable please stop using and contact our team.”Along with heat buildup, there’s Wi-Fi to worry about in this thing too, complete with a companion app that lets users view their videos or share them with a partner. If you think that sounds ill-advised in today’s connected age, you aren’t alone — and neither is the Cock Cam. Sex Tech 49 Photos Behind the scenes at a sex robot factory Alongside names like Lovense and OhMiBod, the Cock Cam is one of a growing field of internet-connected sex toys, and perhaps the most concerning one yet given that we aren’t just talking about remote controls or usage statistics, but video. You know, complete with foreground floppage.Click for more on the intersection of technology and sex. To that end, Julz says your videos are never transmitted to the cloud, but are instead stored locally on your phone. In other words, hackers wouldn’t be able to access your footage by breaching a central server at Julz HQ. They’d need access to your phone itself.Still, we’ve seen other internet-connected sex toys come up well short of their privacy obligations — most notably We-Vibe, which settled a $3.75 million class action lawsuit in 2017 after uploading user statistics to the cloud without consent.”We are very aware that the privacy of our customers is paramount,” Julz director and co-founder Charlie Hudson told me via email. “We are taking all necessary precautions to keep our product as safe and secure as possible.”Hudson adds that the company is currently working to update the app to allow for FaceTime-style live streaming, “with complete confidence that the user’s data and privacy is safe.”Just what the internet needs. Vietnam’s only private airline VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Co. has placed an order with Beoing Co. to buy 100 jets for $11.3 billion (based on the list price), reported Bloomberg. The low-cost carrier will purchase the Boeing 737 Max 200 planes.Signing of the deal is scheduled later on Monday when U.S. President Barack Obama will be on a visit to Vietnam. In a statement to the media, the airways said the delivery of the planes will start from 2019 and will help the carrier to expand its fleet to 200 by 2023.VietJet started operations in 2011 and since then Vietnam’s aviation market has grown consistently. In the past three years, the airline registered a 20 percent growth annually. Bloomberg earlier cited IATA (International Air Transport Association) data that the country is slated to be the world’s top 10 fastest growing aviation markets for the next two decades. It reported that the company today operates 250 flights a day and flies on 50 routes both in Vietnam and across the region including Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar and Malaysia.”They have established themselves domestically with a strong brand and high share of the market in a very quick time,” Brendan Sobie, Singapore-based chief analyst at CAPA Centre for Aviation, told the news agency. “They seem to be extremely ambitious,” he added. In an earlier interview, VietJet’s chief executive officer Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao reportedly said she wanted VietJet to be the “Emirates of Asia,” modelled on a Dubai-based carrier that is the world’s biggest long-haul airline flying on 150 international routes. She expected an initial public offering sometime in the second quarter of 2016-17. The money raised will fund its ambitious expansion to global routes, while also to become Asia’s top budget airlines, she told Bloomberg.Vietnam’s low cost airline market even today has fewer players and remained underserved for long until VietJet’s foray. In 2015, the airline registered revenues of $488 million and passenger capacity of 9.3 million. It targets to double both revenues as well as passenger capacity in this financial year. It accounts for more than 30 percent of Vietnam’s aviation market share.Bloomberg reported earlier that Thao, who will soon become the country’s first self made female billionaire, had brought in a revolution in the conservative world of Pilipino with two-piece swimsuit clad flight attendants across the airline.According to CAPA, VietJet could soon surpass even Vietnam’s national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, as the nation’s biggest domestic carrier in 2016.
Prabhas’ remuneration in SaahoTwitterAfter the grand success of Baahubali 2, Prabhas is all set to appear in a completely different avatar in Saaho. While his fans are extremely excited for the release of the film, the kind of remuneration that Prabhas is being paid for the film will blow everyone’s mind.Saaho is a highly big budget film with popular stars including Prabhas, Shraddha Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Chunky Pandey, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Mahesh Manjrekar among others. As the film’s release is nearing, reports talking about Prabhas being paid a whopping sum of Rs 100 crore have been doing the rounds. If this is true, Prabhas has become the highest paid Indian actor beating all the biggies like the three Khans or Rajnikanth.Apart from Rs 100 crore as fixed fees for Saaho, some reports even claimed that he will also be having a share in the film’s profit. However, all these are still just rumours as no one from the team has confirmed anything regarding the actor’s remuneration.Directed by Sujeeth, Saaho is an action thriller with extensive use of VFX. The teaser of the film impressed all with high octane action, fresh chemistry of Prabhas and Shraddha, and interesting dialogues.Set to be released in four languages, Saaho is certainly expected to have a massive opening at the box office. The film will hit the theatres on August 30.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) submitted memorandums to deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country, including Dhaka, on Thursday, demanding its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proper medical treatment and her release from jail before Eid-ul-Fitr.In Dhaka, several hundred BNP leaders and activists gathered near the Dhaka DC’s office around 10:30am and chanted various slogans, demanding Khaleda’s release.Later, a delegation of BNP, led by Dhaka district BNP assistant organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad, submitted a memorandum to Dhaka DC Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan.Talking to reporters, Salam said the government has kept their ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail without providing her proper treatment.”We submitted a memorandum to the DC demanding her release and proper treatment at the United Hospital,” he said.Salam warned that the government will have to shoulder all the responsibilities if anything bad happens to Khaleda. He said all other district units of the party also submitted memorandums to their respective DC offices to push for the same demand. On 8 February, Khaleda was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The physicists, John Webb from the University of New South Wales and his coauthors from Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Cambridge, used data from two telescopes to uncover the spatial dependence of the fine-structure constant. Using the north-facing Keck telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and the south-facing Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Paranal, Chile, the researchers observed more than 100 quasars, which are extremely luminous and distant galaxies that are powered by massive black holes at their centers.By measuring the quasar spectra, the researchers could gather data on the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by quasars at high redshifts, corresponding to a time about 10 billion years ago. During the time the light traveled through space to reach the telescopes, some of it was absorbed at specific wavelengths by very old gas clouds that today can reveal the chemical composition of the clouds. The cloud compositions could help the scientists determine the fine-structure constant in those areas of the universe at that time, since alpha is a measure of the strength of the electromagnetic force between electrically charged particles. As the coupling constant for the electromagnetic force, it is similar to the constants for the other three known fundamental forces of nature: the strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, and gravitational force. Among its important implications, alpha determines how strongly atoms hold on to their electrons. By combining the data from the two telescopes that look in opposite directions, the researchers found that, 10 billion years ago, alpha seems to have been larger by about one part in 100,000 in the southern direction and smaller by one part in 100,000 in the northern direction. The data for this “dipole” model of alpha has a statistical significance of about 4.1 sigma, meaning that that there is only a one in 15,000 chance that it is a random event. Play This video shows the path of light as a beam as it travels from the quasar, through an intervening galaxy and then to the Earth where we capture it with our telescopes. The inset shows the quasar spectrum as it is redshifted (due to the expansion of the universe as it travels) and as it is imprinted with the absorption signature of the intervening galaxy. • PhysOrg.com iPhone / iPad Apps• PhysOrg.com Audio Podcasts / iTunes• PhysOrg.com Android apps (new version available)• Join PhysOrg.com on Facebook!• Follow PhysOrg.com on Twitter! Copyright Dr. Julian Berengut, UNSW, 2010. May be used with appropriate attribution. Explained: Why many surveys of distant galaxies miss 90 percent of their targets At first, the data surprised Webb and his colleagues, since it seemed to contradict previous results that the scientists had published in 1999. At that time, the scientists had used the north-facing Keck telescope to find that alpha became slightly smaller the further away (and older) the quasars were. So when the scientists first looked at equally distant quasars from the southern hemisphere using the VLT, they were surprised to find the slight increase in alpha. After eliminating any possible bias, though, they realized that they were looking at hemispherical differences of alpha. While the data from just one telescope seemed to suggest that alpha varies in time, data from the two telescopes show that alpha also seems to vary in space. Such a discovery could have major implications, starting with shattering the basic assumption that physical laws are the same everywhere in the universe. The results also violate the Einstein Equivalence Principle, and suggest that the universe may be much larger than currently thought – or even infinite in size. Right now, the scientists want to confirm the results with other experimental methods, and see if the fine-structure constant could truly lead scientists to a very different understanding of our universe. (PhysOrg.com) — One of the most controversial questions in cosmology is why the fundamental constants of nature seem fine-tuned for life. One of these fundamental constants is the fine-structure constant, or alpha, which is the coupling constant for the electromagnetic force and equal to about 1/137.0359. If alpha were just 4% bigger or smaller than it is, stars wouldn’t be able to make carbon and oxygen, which would have made it impossible for life as we know it to exist. Now, results from a new study show that alpha seems to have varied a tiny bit in different directions of the universe billions of years ago, being slightly smaller in the northern hemisphere and slightly larger in the southern hemisphere. One intriguing possible implication is that the fine-structure constant is continuously varying in space, and seems fine-tuned for life in our neighborhood of the universe.
