2 in Jail over Minister Sandolo’s ‘Assassination Plot’

first_imgTwo of the five persons arrested in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Mr. Patrick Sandolo, Minister of Lands, Mines and Energy (LME) at his Todee farm are yet to appear in court. The two are currently in detention at the Monrovia Central Prison, nearly three months after they were charged by the Liberia National Police (LNP).Police charged the defendants based on a complaint from one Alvin Nelson, who is believed to be the caretaker of the Minister’s farm, a court document in the possession of the Daily Observer said.Though Minister Sandolo was not at the farm when the incident took place on July 24, the defendants are being charged with multiple crimes, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, theft of property, burglary, criminal mischief and criminal attempt to commit murder, which under the law is a non bailable offence.Defendants Anthony Mulbah along with Arthur Gono, Alex Gbato, Kpannah Tosh and Abraham Kollie were arrested by police due to a writ of arrest issued by Francis K. Fayiah, stipendiary magistrate of the Careysburg Magisterial Court, in Montserrado County, where the alleged offenses were committed.Alex Gbato and Abraham Kollie are the two persons currently detained at the Monrovia Central Prison awaiting trial, while the other three have been released.Mr. Dominic Kollie, the father of one of the defendants, Abraham Kollie, who spoke with journalists at the Temple of Justice, tearfully explained, “My son has been in jail since July 26 on multiple crimes and he still has not had a court date set. I have talked to the Magisterial Court and still have not had a court date set.“Is there any length of time that he can be held without a court date?“I am afraid that he is lost in the system. I tried calling Minister Sandolo, (but he) referred me to the court. I am getting nowhere fast. And they are still behind bars at the Central Prison.”He also used the occasion to appeal for government’s intervention to have them go to court.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Private sector to block parking meter project

first_img“All options on the table” – GCCI PresidentImplementation of the much panned parking meter project is imminent, but the private sector and civil society have indicated they would employ measures to resist the initiative.GCCI President Deodat IndarThis was on Sunday confirmed by recently elected President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Deodat Indar, who told Guyana Times there must be in-depth analysis before such a project could be accepted.“We are saying that the contract of this parking meter was not awarded properly. There were no studies done, no impact assessments…the entire thing should be wiped clean, and go back to the drawing board and make sure that they do proper analysis,” Indar observed. His comments follow the action of the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC) last week, voting to adopt the amended by-laws for the controversial parking meter project, thereby signalling that Guyanese will soon have to contend with paid parking once again. In its previous incarnation, the project was the subject of multiple court actions, including a case brought by the New Building Society (NBS) Limited and another by a private citizen against the legality of City Hall’s multiple-decade contract with Mexican company Smart City Solutions (SCS).Guyana Times on Sunday questioned the GCCI President on possible legal action that could be taken to prevent the initiative from returning, and Indar stressed: “All options are on the table.” He, however, cautioned that the private sector would first have to assess the amended by-laws before measures in regard to blocking could be initiated.“We are against the parking meters, and we will be working with others, including the Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM) and other civil society groups to mount resistance towards the implementation of parking meters,” he noted.Guyana Times understands that operatives within the private sector will be meeting this week to determine their options and craft plans for advocacy against parking meters. When City Councillors had voted on the measure, Mayor Patricia Chase-Green had restricted them from discussing the contract and concessionaire. People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Councillor Bishram Kuppen had argued that since the by-laws are linked to the contract with Smart City Solutions, the council was attempting to move forward with a contract the legality of which was still under question.Kuppen told all the councillors present that if they support the amended by-laws, they in essence were forcing the citizenry of Georgetown to accept an illegal 40-year contract.Additionally, Councillor Malcolm Ferreira had called for the decision to be put on hold until all court issues regarding the controversial project had been addressed.People’s National Congress Councillors Akeem Peter, Winston Harding, Yvonne Ferguson, Welton Clarke, Oscar Clarke, Noelle Chow-Chee, Heston Bostwick, James Samuels, Trichria Richards, Lyndon Hilliman, Ivelaw Henry and Mayor Chase-Green, along with Team Benschop’s Jameel Rasul, voted to adopt the By-laws.Councillors Kuppen and Sharma voted against, and Ferreira and the PNC’s Carlyle Goring abstained.Meanwhile, former Deputy Mayors Lionel Jaikaran and Sherod Duncan – both of the Alliance For Change (AFC) — refused to participate in the process.Following a 14-day public display, the adopted by-laws will be forwarded to Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan for his approval; and if given, the by-laws would be gazetted.Under the new agreement, persons will be paying $150 per hour, and $800 for eight hours of parking in the city. Residents of the city would, however, be issued with a restricted residential pass for free parking from 17:00h-19:00h Monday to Friday, while parking will be free on Saturdays. When the project was first implemented in 2017, it attracted sustained protests for several weeks, and was eventually suspended by the Communities Minister. While it is expected that the Private Sector will receive support for their position on the Parking Meters Project, it is being argued that it is worrying the same type of support was not given to thousands of protesting sugar workers who were thrown on the breadline after Government’s decision to close three estates and dismiss over 5000 sugar workers. One public commentator, in an invited comment, said that it was unfortunate that there were a few isolated groups championing the cause of the sugar workers from the business and Private Sector Commission (PSC) while countless others, who were not directly affected by the move to shut down the industry, stood and watched from the sidelines.“Now that everybody knows that their business will be negatively affected if City Hall reintroduces the project, every man is on board to lobby and fight to resist the Project. Our sugar workers deserved better. The parking meters project and our collective response should be an eye opener for many people,” the commentator said.last_img read more

Unselfishness key to Liverpool’s free-scoring front three – Salah

first_img0Shares0000Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have scored 29 goals in the Champions League © AFP / Francisco LEONGKIEV, Ukraine, May 25 – Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah admitted it would be “a dream” to cap a sensational debut season at Anfield by ending Real Madrid’s European reign in Saturday’s Champions League final. However, Salah says he would be happy if Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane grabs the goal that takes the Reds to a sixth European crown. Salah has won a series of individual prizes as he has contributed 44 of the 90 goals Liverpool’s front three have scored this season. But the goals have been far more evenly spread in the Champions League.“It doesn’t matter who scores,” Salah told UEFA.com.“Winning games, getting points, that’s the most important thing for us because as you can see, I’ve scored ten goals in the Champions League, Sadio nine, Firmino ten, so all of us are the same.“None of us is selfish or only wants to score. We try to help each other to score goals.”The Egyptian, who had a disappointing spell at Chelsea, has been a revelation since his return to England last summer from Roma. His form has led to Saturday’s clash in Kiev being billed as a Ballon d’Or decider against five-time World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo. And he stressed the importance of maintaining that form for a number of years to match Ronaldo or Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.“The most important thing is to maintain that level, to (keep) doing what I’ve done next season as well,” he said.“I believed (that I was capable of this form). I was at Roma for two years, had two great seasons there and everyone told me to stay, but it was in my mind to come and be successful in England.”The contrast in experience will be stark in the Ukrainian capital as Madrid seek a fourth Champions League in five seasons.By contrast, despite Liverpool’s storied history in the competition, none of Jurgen Klopp’s squad have ever played in a Champions League final.“They’ve won the Champions League three times in the past four years, so they have a lot of experience,” Salah said. But he said the single-game format improves Liverpool’s chances.“It’s one game, not two, so we just need to focus and not think about anything in the past. When you get to the game it’s just 11 against 11.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

TShirt Tuesday The Best Marvel Comics Shirts

first_img Back in the days of geek prehistory, a T-shirt was a signal to the world around you that you cared about your nerdy pursuits enough to fly them like a flag. Companies like Graphitti Designs contracted with movie studios and comics publishers to create shirts with our favorite characters and sold them up on the walls of comic book stores and through mail-order.The computer revolution has enabled the T-shirt world to become something totally new – affordable production and distribution means that shirts can be printed in small quantities and sold anywhere in the world. Starting with Threadless, dozens of companies popped up letting artists and designers show their stuff. It’s a better time than ever to be a geek fashionista, and if you’re looking to expand your wardrobe we’re going to help you out every week… on T-Shirt Tuesday. This week: with Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite dropping, let’s dress up in Marvel Universe togs.Use the coupon code Geek.30 now – October 1st for 30% off.Cosmic ClobbererThe Marvel Universe began with the Fantastic Four – even though the company seems to have left their First Family by the wayside after the disaster that was the last movie – so it’s only right and proper that we lead off with a shirt featuring the ever-loving blue-eyed Thing. Benjamin J. Grimm is one of the most complex tragic figures in comics, a nice Jewish boy from New York transformed against his will into a rock-encrusted powerhouse, and this illustration by PapaBat shows the Thing in front of a big group of his friends and foes.$20, buy it here.Guardians Of The GalaxyWho would have thought that a ragtag group of cosmic B-listers including a talking tree and a murderous raccoon would anchor one of Marvel’s best-loved properties and pull off two movies and counting? The success of Guardians of the Galaxy is proof that the House of Ideas can make anything work if they commit to it hard enough. This sweet-ass retro-styled poster by artist Chris_ is as much of a throwback as Star-Lord’s mixtape.$20, buy it here.Rock GodThe Mighty Thor is one of the most metal characters in the Marvel Universe, a long-haired Norse god come to Earth to battle his weasely brother and a horde of other foes. This charming and sweet design by Nemons uses just a few well-chosen lines to depict him as a slayer of guitar licks as well as frost giants, and gets extra points for including the Odinson’s occasional mustache.$20, buy it here.EmbiggenKamala Khan, the new Ms. Marvel, is one of Marvel’s most successful new creations and shows how an eye for diversity can produce intelligent, engaging stories. It also sells like crazy, regularly topping the New York Times best-seller list in collected format. This clever and funny shirt by kbowser depicts the heroine in mid-transformation, creating a gigantic fist to bop evil right on its nose.$20, buy it here.Mutant YouthIt’s not even arguable that Logan is the best X-Men movie, building on the relationships we’ve seen for decades to create a devastating tale of a hero’s journey coming to an end. It’s a remarkably adult take on a franchise that last saw a giant purple Egyptian try to rule the Earth. This insanely cool shirt design by DRES13 is a take-off on the Raymond Pettibon cover for Sonic Youth’s Goo album, just with Logan and X-23 along for the ride.$20, buy it here. The WatcherUatu the Watcher is one of the millions of brilliantly weird concepts to come out of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s genre-defining run on Fantastic Four – a giant-headed bald man who hangs out on the Moon and keeps an eye on everything in the universe, sworn to never interfere – until he does. This amusing and well-rendered design by Omniverse has Uatu ready for another eternity of human foils and fumbles with a bucket of popcorn to keep him satiated.$20, buy it here.OTPIf you’re not up on your fanfiction lingo, “OTP” stands for “One True Pairing” – e.g. the ideal romantic entanglement for two fictional characters. While we’re not 100% sure that Terry Bollea would relish the idea of making out with Marvel’s jade giant, this shirt by paperbeatsscissors has us cracking up every time we look at it. Here’s a bit of trivia: Hulk Hogan actually had to pay Marvel Comics to use “Hulk” in his wrestling name – that’s why he was “Hollywood” Hogan for a while in the 1990s.$20, buy it here.Deadpool DoodlesThere are a lot of Deadpool shirts out there – the Merc with a Mouth lends himself well to snarky apparel and parodies, after all. But for the money, we think that the best of the lot is the simplest – Enko‘s childlike doodle of the antihero’s thought processes when he goes into a fracas. Sometimes it’s just as easy as that – or at least it should be.$20, buy it here.Feudal WebslingerI love the idea of reinterpreting superheroes – who are essentially the figures of American myths – in other cultural contexts. Artist Figzy takes Japanese rendering styles to transform Peter Parker into a samurai engaging a villainous Dr. Octopus in combat. It’s a beautiful take on the concept that really delivers.$20, buy it here.Iron FistSure, Iron Fist was the weakest of Netflix’s quartet of shows leading into The Defenders, but there’s no denying that the hero’s iconic tattoo is seriously badass. We’re sure there are good stories to be told with the character, despite his racially insensitive origins, and designer tinman888 obviously agrees because he took the time to replicate Danny Rand’s mark on a T-shirt in exacting detail.$20, buy it here.M.O.D.O.G.One of our favorite things about the Marvel Universe is how even the most bizarre creations manage to stick around. Case in point – M.O.D.O.K, the Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing. Created as a giant-brained antagonist for Iron Man, the gruesomely transformed A.I.M. scientist managed to battle the Hulk and Captain America, be a playable character in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and even inspire his own action figure. This well-drawn parody shirt by joshlynch replaces his hideous dome with a cute little pug’s head, because why not?$20, buy it here.
