SA ‘redefining its message to the world’

first_img4 May 2011 As the 21st World Economic Forum on Africa kicks off in Cape Town, South Africa’s message to the world is moving beyond an emphasis on the country’s rich cultural diversity, says Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. “We are now highlighting our achievements in the fields of science, technological innovation, financial services and our recognition as a systemically important member of the international community,” Gordhan said on Wednesday ahead of the opening of the meeting. “In our hosting of WEF Africa, we will confidently say that South Africa is indeed responding to the new reality.” The three-day meeting, starting on Wednesday, will discuss how sub-Saharan Africa can sustain its growth path and become one of the pillars of global growth and demand. To be held under the theme, “Shaping Africa’s Role in the New Reality”, the meeting will take place against the backdrop of the increasing global recognition of Africa’s growth potential. Gordhan, South Africa’s lead minister for the WEF on Africa, said the country was ideally placed in the shifting poles of power and economic growth, not only as an emerging market, but also as a leading economy on a continent that has become an indispensible partner in the global economy and is home to approximately 15% of the world’s population. “We are strong promoters of inclusive growth, job creation, and the diversification of the economy,” the minister said. He added that South Africa was actively participating and contributing to positions formulated in global policy making. “We are also assuming an increasingly important position in the international arena. We are one of the non-permanent members on the United Nations Security Council, the only African country to be a member of the G20, and now most recently, we have taken a seat at the table of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa forum (BRICS), which, with its population of over 3-billion people, serves as a major platform for global dialogue and cooperation.” Among issues to be discussed at the WEF Africa are how African economies can mitigate their exposure to the volatility in commodity prices, and how the continent can strengthen its voice in multilateral forums such as the G20 and the Seventeenth Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 17). The COP 17 conference will take place in Durban in December. Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Dropbox vs. Google Drive vs. Amazon vs. Skydrive: Which One Is Fastest?

first_imgCloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… If my tests convinced me of anything, it is that Skydrive is a work in progress and has a long way to go. I even had trouble setting up the tests on Skydrive. My tests also revealed a number of odd results. When testing files saved from Word, strange extra files sometimes showed up on all the cloud drives except Dropbox. The file names always began with the characters “~$”. Sometimes the mystery files disappeared and sometimes they hung around.Cloud Drive RecommendationsSo here are some quick recommendations:First, do not treat your cloud drive as one huge dumping ground. Create folders and try to force a little organization on yourself. If you save a file to the cloud in order to work on it from another computer, quit the application or close the file on the first computer after you have saved the file to the cloud drive.Make sure you have a local copy of important files in your documents folder – not just the replicated cloud folder on your computer. Interesting things sometimes happen when cloud files get updated or deleted from another computer. When you come back to the computer where you first created a file, you could be in for a nasty surprise. If you cannot get a cloud folder on your computer to update, trying quitting the cloud application or rebooting your system.Dropbox and Amazon appear to be the most reliable solutions with only occasional delays. Google isn’t far behind, and I can’t imagine that Microsoft won’t work hard to improve Skydrive – the company’s subscription model depends on it.Even so, I have no plans to throw away my USB thumb drives. Fighting The Randomization FactorAfter running the tests a few times, I noticed what can only be described as random operating system differences. Sometimes the file would pop up first on my Mac and other times it showed up first on my Windows 7 laptop. In order to eliminate the operating system differences, I restarted the tests and this time stopped the timer when the file showed up on either my Mac running Mountain Lion or my Windows 7 laptop. I also reran my tests with a variety of sizes and types of files. In all I ran twenty-five sets of tests. The differences were significant, if not overwhelmingly huge. The fastest synchs took less than 3 seconds, while a few others took several minutes. The biggest chunk of tests clocked in between 10 seconds and one minute. A few synchs never completed. But which service recorded the best times with the fewest problems? david sobotta Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts Tags:#Amazon#Cloud Providers#cloud service providers#cloud storage#Dropbox#google drive#Microsoft Dropbox FTW!Dropbox ended up being fastest 56% of the time. Even more importantly, it was slowest only 4% of the time.Skydrive brought up the rear. It was fastest on 12% of the tests, but but slowest on a whopping 80% of the tests. It also had two files that never showed up on the Mac and one that never showed on the Windows 7 laptop. The Amazon Cloud slightly outpaced Google Drive – which had one file that never showed up on the Mac and another that took a very long time to complete. How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud As cloud computing services become ever more popular, you might begin to wonder how much you can really trust them to perform when you need them? I decided to find out – by testing the top file-transfer/file-storage/file-backup services. In many ways, getting a file from one computer to multiple computers is the most challenging task for the cloud. And because I like to use multiple computers running multiple operating systems, including Linux, Windows and the Mac, that function is particularly important to me.Cloud Services Can LagI am pretty agnostic when it comes to cloud providers – as long as they are free or close to it. However, as I was moving files around while preparing my most recent book A Week at the Beach The 2013 Emerald Isle Travel Guide I was a little surprised at the lags I sometimes experienced using the big-name cloud-based file-transfer services.More than once when I wanted to use a file from one computer to another, I was disappointed by my cloud services. There were a few times that I got so tired of waiting for a file to show up on my other computer’s cloud drive that I resorted to sneakernet using a USB thumb drive. After my book was published, I decided to go back and run some simple tests to see just how long the four best-known file-transfer/backup services actually take to put the files where you want them.To compare Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud, and Microsoft’s SkyDrive I started by exporting a 500K JPEG test image from Lightroom on my Windows 8 computer directly to each of the four services.last_img read more

Your Client Didn’t Abandon You. You Abandoned Them.

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now When you lose a long time client, it can feel like you’re being abandoned. You’ve stood together through what seems like a lifetime of battles and challenges, always finding a way, no matter how difficult. You had a relationship. Now it’s over. But it isn’t likely that your client abandoned you. It’s more likely that you abandoned them. One of the three following reasons is at the root of your loss. Study them, make changes, and prevent the loss of another client.NeglectThe most common way to lose a client is through neglect. Relationships require careful care and feeding. Ignoring your clients is a form of neglect. You used to call. You used to make appointments for face-to-face visits. You used to send articles that your client would find helpful in thinking about their business. Now . . . nothing. It’s been a long time. Too long.Neglect is form of abandonment. When you discover that your client has opened a new relationship with your competitor, they didn’t abandon you. You abandoned them.ComplacencyAnother way you can abandon your client is to become complacent.Remember how you used to ensure that all of your client’s problems and challenges were taken care of? Remember how you used to follow up to make sure that they were getting the results that they needed? Well they remember too. And they can feel the empty space where the salesperson that cared about them used to be.Because you have a client now doesn’t mean you are entitled to keep them. Just because you created tremendous value for them in the past doesn’t mean you have a right to their business in perpetuity.Complacency is a form of arrogance or a form of laziness, and either leads to abandonment.Failure to GrowYour client’s needs are going to change over time. They are growing and their needs are growing along with them. And if they’re struggling, their needs are changing too. In order to help your clients take advantage of the opportunities they come across, you have to grow. If they have greater challenges than ever, you have to grow big enough to help them overcome those challenges. If you don’t continue to grow, you aren’t going to have the ability to help your clients keep growing. If you are going to keep your client for life, you have to match—or exceed—their growth.Failure to grow is another form of abandonment. You force your clients to need a new partner? In all of these cases, you might feel as if your client abandoned you. The truth of the matter is that your neglect, your complacency, or your failure to grow was your abandonment of your client.QuestionsDid your client abandon you or you them? How does neglect lead to lost clients? How does complacency lead to lost clients? How does a failure to grow lead your clients to need someone new?How do you prevent abandoning your clients?last_img read more

6 recovery tips that elite touch players use

first_imgSimple post-workout habits that’ll help you come back stronger in your next workout, thanks to Karley Banks, assistant coach for the Men’s 20s team at the 2018 Youth World Cup1. Make sure you post-hydrate. It’s not just about hydrating during exercise. If you’ve exercised in the heat and sweated a lot, you may benefit from consuming electrolytes, not just water. The best bet is a low-calorie drink that contains electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium.2. Warm down. An active rather than static recovery is best – a light jog including replicating a few game movements at a very reduced level. Then go through major muscle group stretching exercises for a simple and fast way to help your muscles recover.3. Get on the roller therapy train. Self-massaging with foam rollers, bands and balls helps reduce muscle soreness and allows tissues and muscles to repair, regenerate and recover. Of course if you can have one, a full body massage can also aid recovery.4. Try water therapy. After a particularly hard session is when ice baths, pool sessions or contrast water therapy (alternating hot and cold showers) can benefit to help you recover faster, reduce muscle soreness and prevent injury.5. Eat right. Post-workout, you must refuel your body with high-quality protein and complex carbohydrates to recover, repair tissue, get stronger and be ready for your next session. Popular options: wholegrain toast with hummus; yoghurt with muesli; a protein shake and banana.6. Wear compression garments afterwards. Even if you didn’t wear compression gear during the workout, wearing them after can reduce muscle swelling and fatigue.last_img read more
