No turning back for 2010 hosts

first_img2009 promises to be another heady year for South Africa, but in just 12 months, hundreds of millions of people around the globe will be tuning in for the 2010 Final Draw, an event that will kick-start the biggest celebration this continent has ever seen. TNS Research Surveys, which has gauged public confidence levels over preparations for 2010, says every South African stands to benefit considerably from our hosting of this event. Nobody said it was going to be easy, and for South Africa, gearing to host the biggest single-code sporting event on the planet, 2008 has certainly proved to be more than a litmus test. As Fifa Secretary General Jerome Valcke recently remarked: “There is no turning back.” Urquhart is a former Fifa World Cup media officer and the current editor of Project 2010 Xenophobia, widespread power cuts, the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki and a humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe were just some of the distractions organisers of the tournament had to contend with. The grinding machinery tasked with building and renovating stadiums in all 10 host cities as well as numerous other 2010-related construction projects has performed remarkably well. So much so, that both Fifa and the 2010 Local Organising Committee have expressed confidence that South Africa will meet its 2010 requirements ahead of schedule. 24 December 2008 “We need to harness this energy to talk up the event,” the organisation said in a recent statement. “We recall the incredible energy and joy that swept the whole country when the bid result was announced. Negativity risks damaging this energy and can affect our actual ability to do what we know we can do.” In addition, preparations for the 2009 Confederations Cup – a key curtain-raiser for the World Cup – are on target, with tickets selling briskly. There was also good news on the crime front, with the launch of the recruitment process for 41 000 extra police officers by 2010 and the acquisition of high-tech security equipment – including helicopters, body armour and high-tech bomb disabling equipment – for the tournament. Apart from the labour disputes, spiralling construction costs and political in-fighting that are part and parcel of preparing for an event of this magnitude, there were plenty of other issues. And yet, there was much to draw hope and inspiration from. What a long, strange year it has been. South Africa’s preparations for the 2010 Fifa World Cup have been marked by extraordinary highs and lows.last_img read more

Global Tensions Push MPC Container Ships Deeper into Loss

first_imgzoomIllustration. Image Courtesy: Pixabay under CC0 Creative Commons license Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships (MPCC) widened its net loss in the quarter ended December 31, 2018, amid a number of geopolitical and economic factors. The company’s net loss expanded in the fourth quarter of 2018 to USD 5 million, compared to a loss of USD 2.2 million reported in the same period a year earlier. For the full year, MPC Container Ships’ net loss was at USD 1.6 million, shrinking from a loss of USD 2.5 million seen in 2017.Revenue for the quarter reached USD 52.5 million, rising from USD 13.2 million seen in the same period in 2017. The company’s full year revenue surged to USD 183.5 million from USD 21.4 million reported in 2017.“On the back of improved charter markets, revenues developed favourably in Q1 – Q3 2018. Contrarily, global trade tensions and political uncertainties led to a shift in sentiment in Q4 and earnings were affected by challenging shipping markets. Due to this and the company’s rapid ramp-up and expansion of operations, MPCC reports a net loss for FY 2018,” Constantin Baack, MPC Container Ships CEO, said.Despite the geopolitical environment and charter markets having proven difficult also into 2019, Baack said that the company expects upticks in demand growth paired with limited supply growth for smaller vessel segments, in sum pointing towards a market rebalancing. As of December 31, 2018, the company has acquired and taken over 69 container vessels, of which 61 are fully owned and 8 are operated in a joint venture.“In 2018, MPC Container Ships grew and stabilised operations to become one of the world’ largest owners of feeder container vessels. We assumed ownership of an additional 40 vessels, propelling the fleet to 69 ships, and listed the Company on the Mainboard of the Oslo Stock Exchange,” Baack added.Going forward, MPCC will maintain a low cash break-even, prudent leverage profile and capital allocation. As such, MPCC “is positioned to benefit from expected market improvements whilst we ensure manoeuvrability under current conditions,” Baack concluded.last_img read more

VietJet aims to be Emirates of Asia orders 100 jets from Boeing

first_imgVietnam’s only private airline VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Co. has placed an order with Beoing Co. to buy 100 jets for $11.3 billion (based on the list price), reported Bloomberg. The low-cost carrier will purchase the Boeing 737 Max 200 planes.Signing of the deal is scheduled later on Monday when U.S. President Barack Obama will be on a visit to Vietnam. In a statement to the media, the airways said the delivery of the planes will start from 2019 and will help the carrier to expand its fleet to 200 by 2023.VietJet started operations in 2011 and since then Vietnam’s aviation market has grown consistently. In the past three years, the airline registered a 20 percent growth annually. Bloomberg earlier cited IATA (International Air Transport Association) data that the country is slated to be the world’s top 10 fastest growing aviation markets for the next two decades. It reported that the company today operates 250 flights a day and flies on 50 routes both in Vietnam and across the region including Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar and Malaysia.”They have established themselves domestically with a strong brand and high share of the market in a very quick time,” Brendan Sobie, Singapore-based chief analyst at CAPA Centre for Aviation, told the news agency. “They seem to be extremely ambitious,” he added. In an earlier interview, VietJet’s chief executive officer Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao reportedly said she wanted VietJet to be the “Emirates of Asia,” modelled on a Dubai-based carrier that is the world’s biggest long-haul airline flying on 150 international routes. She expected an initial public offering sometime in the second quarter of 2016-17. The money raised will fund its ambitious expansion to global routes, while also to become Asia’s top budget airlines, she told Bloomberg.Vietnam’s low cost airline market even today has fewer players and remained underserved for long until VietJet’s foray. In 2015, the airline registered revenues of $488 million and passenger capacity of 9.3 million. It targets to double both revenues as well as passenger capacity in this financial year. It accounts for more than 30 percent of Vietnam’s aviation market share.Bloomberg reported earlier that Thao, who will soon become the country’s first self made female billionaire, had brought in a revolution in the conservative world of Pilipino with two-piece swimsuit clad flight attendants across the airline.According to CAPA, VietJet could soon surpass even Vietnam’s national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, as the nation’s biggest domestic carrier in 2016.last_img read more
