Colin Kaepernick, who made a rousing debut as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback Sunday replacing concussed Alex Smith, will take all the first-team reps for the Niners as they prepare to face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. This comes from none other than Smith, to ESPN.The move seemingly would put Kaepernick on track to start against the Saints; players who receive first-team reps usually draw starts for that week’s game.Harbaugh said earlier Wednesday the QB for the NFC West-leading Niners (7-2-1) could change week to week, and even during the course of a game.Kaepernick went 16 for 23 for 243 yards, two touchdowns and an impressive passer rating of 133.1 in his first NFL start Monday against Chicago. The second-round draft pick out of Nevada in 2011 hardly seemed fazed by football’s big stage. He directed scoring drives and made beautiful throws on the Niners’ initial four possessions and completed 12 of his first 14 passes, with a 57-yard throw to Kyle Williams, setting up Vernon Davis’ 3-yard TD on the next play.Harbaugh rated Kaepernick’s debut start as “A-plus-plus.”Smith said plans to fight for his job once he is fully healthy, but he had yet to be medically cleared Wednesday after missing Monday night’s 32-7 rout of the Bears while recovering from a concussion. He was supportive Wednesday of Kaepernick’s success, even if the second-year pro takes Smith’s starting job as 49ers quarterback.“If you can’t be happy for your teammate’s success you’re playing the wrong sport. Go play tennis or golf or something,” Smith said Wednesday. “That’s ridiculous, I think. That doesn’t belong in team sports, in my opinion. It’s the quarterback position. It gets a lot of attention. We’re going to get talked about.”Harbaugh underwent a follow-up evaluation for his irregular heartbeat Tuesday and said, “believe we’ve got that one licked.” He has quit chewing tobacco and given up the four or five Diet Cokes he was drinking daily after doctors encouraged him to improve his diet and decrease his caffeine intake. Harbaugh underwent a cardiovert procedure last Thursday.“Zero,” he said of soda and dipping. “Cold turkey.”He swears he’s had no headaches as he moves off caffeine.Smith completed 18-of-19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in a Monday night win Oct. 29 at Arizona for a passer rating of 157.1. Smith then sustained a concussion in the second quarter of a 24-24 tie against St. Louis on Nov. 11. He even threw a touchdown pass with blurred vision six plays after taking the hit doctors believe caused his injury.

Traders hope the ease of doing business will improve drastically with the new uniform guidelines for membership structure in equity derivatives and cash segments, a report says. The norms that trading regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has framed will become applicable from April 1 to a trading member, self-clearing member, clearing member and professional clearing member.”Unification of membership structure across equity cash and derivatives segments of stock exchanges is vital to improving ease of doing business,” the Sebi circular says.A stockbroker in the cash segment who is already registered as a self-clearing member or a clearing member in the derivatives segment would “automatically” have the same status in the cash segment from April 1, it said.On the other hand, the professional clearing members would be treated the same in both the segments.Stockbrokers in the cash segment now act as both trading as well as self-clearing members, but in the derivatives segment they act as separate entities, the report said.Stockbrokers, not yet registered as a self-clearing member or clearing member, in the derivatives segment, can discharge the same work in the cash segment subject to certain conditions.Such entities would have to comply with net-worth requirements on or before September 30, according to the circular. The entities failing to meet the requirement would continue as a trading member in cash segment subject to conditions. They would have to tie up with a clearing member or professional clearing member on or before September 30 to clear and settle their trades.”The existing PCMs (professional clearing members) in derivatives segment shall become PCMs in cash segment with effect from April 1.”However, the existing Custodian Clearing Member in the cash segment shall continue to act as Custodian Clearing Member in cash segment only,” Sebi says. The Sebi board decided In June last year to discard the category of sub-brokers as market intermediaries taking into account the growth of online platforms that made their role redundant to a large extent.
AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury (L) and Kamal HossainFormer president Badruddoza Chowdhury and Gana Forum president Kamal Hossain have called for a national unity for the emergence of a greater political force. They came up with the call in a joint statement issued on Thursday.”We call upon all those who love the country, believe in the country’s Liberation War, independence and sovereignty to get united to build a progressive Bangladesh ensuring the full rights of all communities live both in plains and hills,” the statement reads. They said a greater political force must emerge comprising students, educated and noted citizens, lawyers, physicians, teachers, freedom fighters and their family members, businesspeople, workers, farmers, ex-government and non-government officials and employees and other professionals apart from like-mined political parties with a demand for acceptable Election Commission, election system and election laws for holding the next election in a fair, credible and impartial manner with the participation of all political parties and individuals. They also said the new political force will also be meant for building a happy and prosperous Bangladesh free from poverty, corruption and terrorism.Explaining the background of the 1971 Liberation War, the two leaders said the liberation-aspiring people of Bangladesh earned independence and established democracy through their self-sacrifices in a nine-month bloody war.”The constitution written with the blood of 30 lakh martyrs is the highest law of Bangladesh. The charter clearly states that all the powers of the republic belong to people, and the power will be exercised through the elected representatives,” the statement observed. The two leaders said people start losing their power when the values and the spirit of the Liberation War are neglected and people’s rights are ignored.”Under the circumstances, it’s a time-befitting demand for building a non-violent political platform uniting people to ensure their empowerment,” the statement added.Mentioning that people’s unity is the great power, the duo said ‘many powers’ in the world had to bow out to people’s united efforts. “The people of Bangladesh must get united to bring a meaningful change to the social system.”
Record Store Day is an annual April event at independent music stores. But a second, slightly smaller version of the event happened on Black Friday. Over the weekend at Cactus Music here in Houston, there were live in-store music performances and lots of special limited releases — many by major artists. You’ll find Quinn Bishop behind the counter at Cactus. “Record Store Day, and the limited edition releases that come with it, has been kind of a game changer for us. And you build upon that with the Shop Small Saturday that comes directly after that. It really calls to people to spend locally, and that really helps us as well,” he said. Many artists release limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day — special ten-inch records or picture discs, often with out-of-print or unreleased material. “You’re always gonna see a piece from Bob Dylan, from the Beatles, from the Rolling Stones,” he said. “You’re seeing some of the more curated smaller labels that specialize in dead art, so to speak. You know, records that never even made it to the CD format.” That’s because many early CDs were only greatest hit collections or major releases. Sales of vinyl shrunk as CDs came along and then mp3 downloads. But Bishop says vinyl is making a resurgence. “And where vinyl was 15 percent of our business almost ten years ago, it’s now over, it’s almost 55 percent of our business now,” Bishop said. It’s not a case of nostalgia or fascination with a retro technology. “You have these millennials. Well, their parents did not own records –their parents owned CDs or cassettes. So for them, they see vinyl and turntable culture as something that’s their own. I mean, they’ve claimed it as defining their generation,” he said. Bishop sees a growing number of music fans with what he calls a “bookshelf mentality.” “They plow through everything out there that’s of interest to them,” he said. “And they kind of distill it into the things that, the music that defines them, and they buy that on LP and that’s what’s on the shelf. It doesn’t mean that they have every recorded work by somebody that they casually put on their phone. But they buy those albums.” And Bishop doesn’t expect to see the CD dying off anytime soon. He says despite the convenience of having music on your phone, downloaded music just doesn’t sound as good, and music fans are finding that listening to a CD in your car sounds better than streaming music. Listen 00:00 /02:35 Quinn Bishop from Cactus Music looks through the store’s collection of vinyl records – a format that’s enjoying a resurgence. Photo via Twitter @OfficialWebzineThe latest judicial ruling on the termination of the Obama-era DACA program is just one part in a bigger legal puzzle that has been building up since the Trump administration announced its termination last September.DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and allowed immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children, known as ‘dreamers,’ to stay and work legally under renewable permits.Tuesday’s ruling from federal judge John Bates categorized the government’s plan to terminate the program as “arbitrary and capricious” and gave the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) 90 days to “better explain its view” that DACA is illegal. If the government fails to produce a more convincing argument in the three-month timeframe, the DHS “must accept and process new as well as renewal DACA applications,” the judge said.So far, Bates is the third judge that has ruled against the Trump administration’s plan to end the program. Here are some thoughts on last night’s big victory for DACA in the federal district court in D.C.— Josh Dorner (@JoshDorner) April 25, 2018The National Immigration Law Center (NILC), which is headquartered in Los Angeles, is one of the organizations that are closely monitoring the ongoing litigation around DACA.NILC is counsel in one of the cases, specifically one that was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and that is currently on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.According to a document compiled by NILC, more than ten lawsuits have been filed challenging the government’s termination of DACA and the plaintiffs in the cases that have gained the most traction brought claims which are primarily based on the Administrative Procedure Act and the U.S. Constitution’s Due Process and Equal Protection clauses.Besides the case in which NILC is a counsel, which is ‘Batalla Vidal v. Nielsen,’ another lawsuit which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California is currently on appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.Additionally, two nationwide injunctions that were issued earlier this year applied only to renewal requests for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.SkepticismJudge Bates’ ruling has been welcomed by the ‘dreamer’ community but, at the same time, some of its members are skeptical about how helpful it will be for their future.Daniel Candelaria, advocacy organizer for United We Dream (UWD) in Texas, said they are being “cautious.”“We know how long these court decisions, these situations from the court, take given our previous experience,” noted Candelaria, who added that such decisions “can go in either direction.”Also on behalf of UWD, Sanaa Abrar –who works as advocacy and policy manager for the organization—, underscored in a written statement that “DACA has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of youth and their families.”“We will not stop fighting until every single person in our community is able to live with safety and dignity,” Abrar added.Houston-based Immigrant Families and Students in the Struggle (commonly known as FIEL, by its Spanish acronym) categorized Bates’ ruling as a “victorious decision for undocumented youth.”In a statement and referring to the 90-day period the government has provide Bates with the explanation he has requested, FIEL added the organization hopes that “in the end the Trump administration either waits out the allotted time or does not respond,” which, the statement adds, would allow DACA “to move forward.”The Texas Democratic Party also reacted to the latest ruling.Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement that “the judicial branch has rejected Trump’s cruel and unconstitutional actions.”Call for clean DREAM ActNonetheless, Hinojosa added that “the fight for DACA is not over,” and that Congress should pass a so-called clean DREAM Act.The Trump administration, which contends DACA is a misuse of executive power, reacted negatively to Bates’ ruling and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday it is “good news” for smuggling organizations and criminal networks and “horrible news for our national security.”You can read the National Immigration Law Center’s document on litigation regarding the termination of DACA here: Share
HQ Trivia is trying to horn in on TV’s biggest night: The live game-show app will stage a special Emmys-themed show next Monday, Sept. 17, during the Emmy Awards — with a $100,000 cash prize going to a single winner.Launched in August 2017, HQ Trivia has amassed a fanbase of millions (and numerous copycat competitors) with the promise of letting users win real money. In a normal game, the winning HQ Trivia players split the cash prize, sometimes ending up with just a few dollars each. But for the app’s Emmy Awards Night game, sponsored by Target, it will be a winner-takes-all format for the $100,000 pool. That would be its biggest payout to a single player to date. There’s another difference: For the Emmys game, host Scott Rogowsky will keep asking questions until only a single winner is left standing. Users will be able to use extra “lives” (letting them stay in the game after they’ve answered a question incorrectly) but only until question 15. The regular HQ Trivia games comprise 12 trivia questions, giving users just 10 seconds to tap the right multiple-choice answer. Popular on Variety HQ Trivia’s Emmys game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. ET on Sept. 17 — right in the middle of the awards telecast. NBC will broadcast the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards live on Sept. 17, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. According to HQ Trivia, its Emmys-themed event could include questions about TV shows, actors, and historical facts about the Emmy Awards and the telecast. The special edition of the trivia game comes as HQ Trivia’s momentum has waned. In July 2018, users downloaded the HQ Trivia app an estimated 560,000 times, down from over 2 million in February, according to research firm Sensor Tower. Last month, HQ Trivia launched an app for Apple TV to expand beyond mobile phones.HQ Trivia’s parent company, New York-based Intermedia Labs, was co-founded by Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll. They’re two of the creators of Vine, which Twitter acquired in 2012 and then shut down four years later.HQ Trivia runs its regular games weekdays at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET, and on the weekends at 9 p.m. ET. Questions are crafted created by a team of writers, researchers and fact-checkers, and the trivia gets harder as the game progresses. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Kolkata: Soon after addressing an election rally in the South Kolkata Lok Sabha constituency, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee gave a brief interview to The Wire’s founding editor Siddharth Varadarajan and its Calcutta-based contributor Himadri Ghosh. In the interview, she discussed the possible outcomes of the election on May 23, accused Narendra Modi of political vendetta and also touched upon how the BJP’s so-called growth will come down drastically once they are ousted from the Centre. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataExcerpts: SV: Well, the 2019 election, Narendra Modi has been the face, the voice, the name that has dominated the campaign. And you have been perhaps the most forthright in directly challenging him. You say no matter what happens, Narendra Modi must go. Why do you believe that this one person’s ouster is so crucial to this election? MB: He’s not only a fascist, he’s an egoist. He has tremendous political vendetta. I used some harsh words today. But they are not harsh words. They are politically strong, bold words. Because, you know, we respect our great son of the soil, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, very much. We are celebrating 200 years this year. But the goons, the BJP goons from the Amit Shah rally, they have totally destroyed Vidyasagar’s statue… These type of people must go from this country. They must go from politics. The politician should know what is politics. Politics means sacrifice. Politics means dedication, determination, devotion. But if you think politics means “goondaism”, hooliganism, fair enough… In a democracy, everybody has the right to speak. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateSV: Does it worry you that in Bengal, in a very short duration of time, the BJP has emerged as your principal challenger? The Left does not seem to be in the race. MB: Not at all, somebody will be the opposition. In a democratic setup, somebody will be ruling party, somebody will be opposition. I may be number one, but they may be number two, three or four. It is the CPM’s business, that CPM’s goons, they are joining the BJP, because the BJP is giving… to them also. So it is their matter. I don’t mind who will come as the second person. I will certainly try that I must be first. HG: Madam, we have seen for some time, people from the CPM are now marching under the BJP flag. Who do you blame for this? MB: I am telling you, this is not growth. This is absolutely not growth. This happens when the BJP is in power in the Centre. They use the situation. There, they work through agencies, so there is some growth. If the BJP is not in power, then this growth will die in a second. It is temporary. SV: In the event that the BJP falls short by a significant number… how will you… MB: We will not support the BJP. SV: Under any circumstances? MB: No.
