Pensioner dies in Sophia accident

first_img… as 32 road deaths recorded for 1st quarterPedal cyclist Mohan Ramkellawan of South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara died on Friday at about 19:30h in an accident involving a motorcar on Dennis Street, Sophia, Georgetown.The 72-year-old Ramkellawan and the driver of motorcar HC 7724 were reportedly both proceeding west along Denis Street, Sophia when the accident occurred. The driver, a 52-year-old resident of Sophia, reportedly told investigators that the cyclist swerved into his path and he was not able to apply his brakes in time.Rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, Ramkellawan was pronounced dead on arrival, while the driver was taken into custody.Ramkellawan’s body is at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force has reported that there have been 32 deaths on the country’s roadways so far for 2018.On Friday, Commissioner of Police (ag.) David Ramnarine along with Assistant Commissioners’ N.Hoppie, and M. Graham DSM, Senior Superintendent E. Watts and Traffic Chief R. Ashram met at Police Divisional Traffic Heads to discuss the traffic situation in the counrty.Among the issues discussed was a review the current traffic situation, particularly regarding road traffic fatalities and contributing factors.“This is as a result of the current unacceptable situation where from 1st January to 15th April, 2018, compared with the same period in 2017, indicates pellucidly that the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department must immediately enhance the education of road users and enforcement of the Traffic Laws,” a release from the force stated.A total of 259 accidents were recorded for this year.last_img read more
